Colourful Bowls And Free Froyo: Inside Leeds’ New KefiYo Craze

Headingley has a new foodie obsession – and ten lucky customers are about to get a year’s supply of it for free.

Mediterranean-inspired frozen yoghurt café KefiYo has enjoyed a whirlwind first summer in Leeds, with queues forming outside its Ash Road store and its brightly topped bowls becoming an increasingly familiar sight on social media.

Now, as the business celebrates its official launch, KefiYo is giving ten people the chance to win free frozen yoghurt every month for a year.

The café sits next to Leeds Beckett University’s sports campus, close to Headingley Cricket Ground and the Leeds rugby ground, putting it right in the middle of one of the city’s busiest student and sporting areas.

Since opening, it has attracted everyone from university students and younger food fans to families and longstanding froyo devotees.

The concept is simple: choose your frozen yoghurt and load it up.

Seven core flavours are currently available – mango, coconut, matcha, natural, passion fruit, strawberry and mixed berry – alongside a vegan option that changes each week.

KefiYo is also working on a line-up of seasonal autumn flavours, which will be announced soon.

Customers can pile on unlimited standard toppings as part of the price of their bowl, with superfoods and selected premium toppings available for an extra charge. Small, medium and large servings are currently available at introductory launch prices.

But the team behind KefiYo is aiming to make the brand about more than a trip to the dessert counter.

The café has already started hosting and collaborating on local Pilates sessions and run clubs, where participants can enjoy matcha and açaí bowls topped however they like.

These events form part of KefiYo’s wider focus on food, movement and community, with its menu also featuring smoothies, speciality coffee and matcha alongside frozen yoghurt and açaí.

The business has quickly found an audience online too, with customers sharing their own colourful KefiYo creations across social platforms.

Co-founder Gagan Chera has also appeared on BBC News discussing the difficulties businesses can face during heatwaves.

To celebrate the official launch, KefiYo will now turn the spotlight back onto its customers with a new Instagram giveaway.

Ten winners will receive 12 medium frozen yoghurts each – enough to claim one every month for the next year.

Entry has deliberately been kept straightforward. Instagram users will need to follow @kefi.yo, repost the official competition post and tag a friend.

Chera said the response to KefiYo’s opening had exceeded expectations after the team spent almost a year preparing the café and refining the frozen yoghurt’s taste and texture.

He said seeing customers queue outside, share their creations online and return to the café had made the lengthy development process worthwhile, with the giveaway designed as both a thank-you to early supporters and a way of introducing more people to the brand.

Even the KefiYo name is rooted in its feel-good philosophy.

It comes from the Greek word “kefi”, which refers to joy, passion and a zest for life, and that sense of fun runs through everything from the café’s colourful branding to the anything-goes approach to creating a bowl.

The founding team combines experience in food entrepreneurship with knowledge of the fitness and nutrition industries, which also explains the brand’s growing links with Leeds’ wellness community.

    To enter the competition:

    • Follow @kefi.yo on Instagram
    • Repost KefiYo’s official competition post
    • Tag a friend in the post

You can find KefiYo at 17 Ash Rd, Headingley, Leeds LS6 3JJ.
