Sprinkle flaky sea salt on top to sharpen the sweetness. These brownies are perfect for slicing into bars. The caramel sets just enough to stay neat but still gives that rich, sticky pull when bitten into. Great for traybakes sold in a cake shop or boxed as gifts.

    Chocolate Buttercream: Soft and Sweet

    Buttercream adds fluff. It’s sweet, spreads fast, and sets slightly on top. Make it with butter, icing sugar, cocoa powder, and a splash of milk. Whip until soft and pale. Add melted chocolate for a richer version. This works best on thick brownies with less fudgy centres. A sweet, soft icing can be too much on a rich base, so aim for balance. Sprinkle crushed biscuits, sprinkles, or chocolate curls on top.

    Peanut Butter Frosting: Sweet-Salty Combo

    Mix smooth peanut butter, butter, and icing sugar. Use milk to thin the mixture until it becomes spreadable. This icing adds salt, protein, and a creamy finish. This icing is ideal for brownies that contain chocolate chips or chopped nuts. Dust with cocoa powder or add a swirl of jam for contrast. It’s the sort of topping that turns a basic bake into a full dessert.

    Do Brownies Even Need Icing?

    Sometimes, no topping works better. Fudgy brownies can often stand alone. But icing adds value, appearance, and shelf appeal. For celebration trays, birthday boxes, or café counter bakes, the right icing can lift the look and help you stand out. If you’re choosing from a cake shop, iced brownies signal extra effort. Customers often pick with their eyes, and a glossy top can tip the decision.
